Coconut Bay Leads Earth Day Cleanup Drive at Vieux Fort Pond, Inspiring Community Action

Must Read

The Vieux Fort Fisheries, affectionately known as the Pond, was transformed into a hub of activity as volunteers and a dedicated team led by Coconut Bay Resort and Spa, in collaboration with local partners and volunteers, gathered for a significant cleanup effort. This initiative, aligning with Earth Day celebrations from the previous week, underscores a commitment to environmental stewardship on the island.

John Miles, General Manager of Coconut Bay and Serenity, shared his reflections on the event and the motivation behind this environmental initiative to clean up the fishing pond.

“A couple of weeks ago, we visited with some guests and saw the condition of the area. It was clear that this wasn’t the representation of Saint Lucia we wanted,” Miles explained. He emphasized the importance of sustained efforts, stating, “Every quarter or so, Coconut has pledged to actually come down and do a cleanup. This comes on the heels of Earth Day, and we see it as a way to give back to Mother Earth.”

Miles also highlighted the impact such initiatives have on the perception of Saint Lucia. “Our beautiful island shouldn’t be seen as unkempt. When guests come, they should leave with a positive image of Saint Lucia as a pristine destination. With today’s global economic challenges, every decision to travel counts, and we want to ensure Saint Lucia remains an attractive choice.”

Echoing the sentiment, Tresha Lionel, a resident of Vieux Fort and founder of the non-profit Vieux Fort Strong, applauded Coconut Bay’s efforts. “About two weeks ago, we started our first series of the cleanup campaign in the pond, recognizing its importance to the economic welfare of Vieux Fort,” Lionel remarked. “Environmental issues are global, yet we need to localize solutions to truly aid our community. Coconut Bay’s involvement has not only brought more hands on deck but also fostered a sense of collaboration and cultural change within Vieux Fort.”

Lionel’s foundation, Vieux Fort Strong, has been at the forefront of promoting conservation and community initiatives. “Part of our main mandate is conservation and environment. Seeing such a collaborative spirit among local entities bodes well for the community’s unity and progress,” Lionel noted.

Mr. Miles concluded by stating that through ongoing efforts and partnerships, Coconut Bay and Serenity aim to not only preserve but enhance the natural environment, ensuring that Saint Lucia shines bright on the global stage as a beacon of beauty and sustainability.
