Controversial U.S. Cardinal to Play Key Role in Pope Francis’ Burial Ceremonies

Must Read

The retired Archbishop of Los Angeles, Cardinal Roger Mahony, who has faced longstanding criticism over his handling of clerical sexual abuse cases, is set to play an official role in the burial rites of Pope Francis, according to a report by CNN.

Mahony, 89, is listed among a small group of nine cardinals, along with several bishops and priests, who will participate in the ceremonies to close the pope’s coffin and witness his burial at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Although he was relieved of all duties within the Los Angeles Archdiocese in 2013, Mahony will serve as a “cardinal priest,” a designation within the College of Cardinals that acknowledges his length of service.

CNN reports that Mahony’s involvement stems from his status as the most senior cardinal priest currently available. Other high-ranking prelates expected to participate include Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals; Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State and the most senior cardinal bishop under the age of 80; and Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, the protodeacon tasked with announcing the election of a new pope.

Mahony’s inclusion in the ceremonies has sparked renewed debate, given his controversial past. Nonetheless, a Vatican spokesperson told CNN that his role is based strictly on protocol and seniority.

Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this week, will be laid to rest in one of Rome’s most iconic basilicas. His funeral has attracted global attention not just for its spiritual and historical significance, but also for the complicated legacies intertwined in its proceedings.
