In the wake of recent violent crime in the north of the island, Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for the Northern Division, Elvis Thomas, has confirmed that law enforcement is actively pursuing those responsible and reviewing its strategies to restore calm to the affected communities.
Over the past two weeks, at least three homicides and several serious injuries have been recorded in the northern corridor. Speaking to Saint Lucia Daily Post, Assistant Commissioner Thomas expressed deep concern, reiterating the police’s position that “one death is too many.”
“As a country, we must do everything in our power to deal with these situations. The police are fully committed to ensuring that individuals responsible for these violent incidents are apprehended and brought before the courts,” Thomas said. “We also appeal to citizens to resolve their issues peacefully. Taking a life leaves a family devastated and a community broken.”
He noted that the recently formed gang and narcotics unit, now under the leadership of Inspector Shervon Matthieu, has already made significant strides in cracking down on gang-related crime and illegal drug activity. The unit’s creation is part of a broader reorganization aimed at enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in tackling organized crime.
“We are constantly reviewing and adjusting our strategies based on the nature of the threats we face,” Thomas added. “Our ultimate goal remains the same—to make Saint Lucia a safer, more peaceful place for all.”
Police continue to urge residents to cooperate with investigations and make use of available conflict resolution resources as the fight against crime intensifies
