In a stirring address marking the nation’s 46th Independence anniversary, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre emphasized unity, resilience, and the continued pursuit of national prosperity. Speaking to Saint Lucians at home and abroad, the Prime Minister reflected on the country’s journey since gaining independence on February 22, 1979.

“This yearly moment of reflection provides an opportunity to honour our past, celebrate our achievements, and renew our shared commitment to our country’s unity, resilience, and prosperity,” he stated.

Pierre acknowledged the progress made in shaping policies, developing the economy, and advocating for national interests on the world stage. He underscored the importance of independence in securing fundamental rights, including education, healthcare, employment, and security.

The Prime Minister paid tribute to the nation’s past, highlighting the enduring impact of slavery and the ongoing pursuit of reparations. He called on citizens to remember the less fortunate and remain committed to justice and equality.

The theme of this year’s celebrations, “Forward Together: Health and Well-being for a Prosperous Nation,” reflects a national call to action. Pierre emphasized that prosperity is not solely measured by economic growth but by the well-being of the people. He called on Saint Lucians to take personal responsibility for their health while acknowledging the government’s increased healthcare investment. He urged collective efforts to curb the rise of non-communicable diseases and pledged continued support for the country’s healthcare system.

Addressing the growing challenges of alcohol and drug abuse, Pierre outlined a multifaceted approach to combating the crisis. His government’s strategy includes prevention, treatment expansion, enforcement of stronger regulations, community support, and youth empowerment. He urged society to unite against the harmful effects of substance abuse.

Road safety was also a key concern, with Pierre announcing government plans to strengthen laws related to reckless driving and substance-influenced offenses. He called for responsible driving to prevent unnecessary loss of life and strain on the healthcare system.

In his vision for national progress, the Prime Minister highlighted the contributions of various sectors, from education and entrepreneurship to agriculture and innovation. He encouraged the diaspora to actively engage in Saint Lucia’s development through investments, skill-sharing, and support for healthcare and education initiatives.

Public safety and justice remain high on the government’s agenda. Pierre reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equipping law enforcement agencies and addressing delays in the justice system. The long-awaited construction of the Halls of Justice is set to commence, aiming to enhance legal infrastructure and efficiency.

The Prime Minister stressed the need to support vulnerable groups, citing increased pensions and the establishment of a minimum wage as steps towards social equity. He vowed continued efforts to improve workers’ quality of life and uphold the principle of fair wages.

Saint Lucia’s cultural and sporting achievements were also celebrated, with national icons such as Sir Arthur Lewis, Derek Walcott, Darren Sammy, Lavern Spencer, and Julien Alfred receiving recognition. Pierre praised their accomplishments as a source of national pride and inspiration for the youth.

While acknowledging progress, he cautioned against complacency, urging citizens to reject self-doubt and embrace their potential. “In this 46th year of independence, we must remain steadfast in the belief that we are as good as any and can take our country to higher levels of social, cultural, and economic development,” he asserted.

The Prime Minister concluded by calling for unity and collective effort in shaping a better future for Saint Lucia. “We were given this baton of independence 46 years ago; let’s not drop it. Let’s strive to make every generation better and all Saint Lucians wealthier, both spiritually and materially.”
